An opportunity like that is alien to the framing of perception in Smith's poetry, which sees advancement (here, the phenomenon of poetic being; the existence of the poetry in the first place) as the outcome of everything opposite to the environment in the article. The conference and the presentations thereat were "innovative, creative, fascinating, beautiful," and those presentations were more important--because more fun, maybe?--than Smith's original fearful dread.<br /><br />Erroneous estimate!
